The Great Realisation about the Great Resignation
A recent poll among Singaporeans has shed light on the deeper reasons why many professionals are choosing to leave their jobs—and what they expect from the future of work. The findings point to a significant shift in mindset: a growing belief that life should be about more than just work, and that employers need to align with this evolving perspective.
This global trend, widely referred to as The Great Resignation, marks a wave of employees voluntarily leaving their roles in pursuit of greater purpose, flexibility, and well-being. In Singapore, the trend is clearly taking root. According to a study by Mercer, 69% of companies surveyed reported a rise in employee turnover during the first half of 2021, compared to the same period the previous year.
But what’s really driving this shift?
To find out, we conducted a survey within the EGN Singapore network. The feedback echoed a strong and consistent theme: employees are reevaluating what truly matters in their lives. The pandemic has accelerated a collective rethinking of values, pushing many to seek roles that offer more meaning, better work-life integration, and supportive workplace cultures.
Employees are no longer content with traditional definitions of success. They want purpose, flexibility, mental well-being, and a genuine connection to the work they do. They expect their leaders to adapt and create environments that respect both professional ambitions and personal needs.
As leaders, HR professionals, and organizations prepare for what’s next, it’s clear that attracting and retaining talent in this new era requires more than perks and paychecks. It demands empathy, trust, and a renewed commitment to employee well-being.
